Choosing

Tally for FMCG distributors: what it handles well, and what to add for the vans

Tally is excellent accounting software. What it is built for, the field work that happens away from the desk, and how distributors run a van app beside it without typing anything twice.

Short answer

Tally is accounting and billing software built for the office: ledgers, GST returns, the accountant’s work. A distributor with vans also has work that happens away from the desk: salesmen billing from vans, cash collected at shops, stock loaded and unloaded. Many distributors keep Tally for the accounts and add a van sales app for the road.

Tally is the software most Indian distributors’ accountants already know, and for good reason. The question is not whether Tally is good. It is whether the work you are worried about happens where Tally is: at a desk in the office.

What Tally is built for

Tally is accounting software with billing and inventory: ledgers, GST, stock by godown and the reports your accountant and auditor need. TallyPrime Silver is listed on Tally’s own pricing page at ₹750 a month + 18% GST for a single PC (checked 22 September 2026; see Tally’s page for current prices and multi-user editions).

What happens away from the desk

An FMCG distributor with vans has a second business that runs on the road:

  • A salesman billing thirty shops from a van, some with no mobile signal.
  • Cash, UPI and credit collected at shop doors, bill by bill.
  • Stock that leaves the godown on a van and has to come back accounted for.
  • Credit limits that have to hold when the owner is not standing there.
  • A day that has to close before the salesman goes home.

Before choosing any software for this, ask the vendor to show each of these working on a salesman’s phone. That applies to Tally add-ons, to us, and to anyone else.

Keep in Tally (the office)

  • Accounts and ledgers
  • GST returns
  • Purchases and the company's account
  • Your accountant's reports

Add for the road (the vans)

  • Billing on the salesman's phone
  • Van loading, unloading, damage
  • Collections and per-shop credit limits
  • The day closed each evening
Two jobs, two tools, one set of numbers handed to the accountant.

How to run both without typing twice

  1. Salesmen bill on the van app all day.
  2. Each evening, the day is closed in the van app: cash, UPI, credit, stock.
  3. The accountant receives the day’s or week’s bills and payments as a file and keeps the books in Tally.

The same question comes up with Vyapar; see Vyapar or a van sales app. If the names of these tools blur together, read DMS, SFA and van sales apps explained.

How Mulberry Sales fits

Mulberry Sales is not accounting software and does not replace Tally. It handles the road: billing on Android phones even with no signal, van loading and unloading, collections, per-shop credit limits and the daily close. Bills and payments export to Excel for your accountant (Growth plan and up); there is no live connection to Tally, so the accountant imports or enters from that file. Questions people ask

Is Tally enough for an FMCG distributor?

For accounts, GST and the counter, usually yes. For work that happens on the road — salesmen billing from vans, collections at shops, van stock and credit limits — distributors with vans usually add a van sales app and keep Tally for the accountant.

Can I use a van sales app and Tally together?

Yes. A common setup is to run the vans on a van sales app and hand the day's bills and payments to the accountant, who keeps the books in Tally. With Mulberry Sales this handover is an Excel file, not a live connection.

Do I need to stop using Tally to use Mulberry Sales?

No. Mulberry Sales is not accounting software and does not replace Tally. It handles what happens after the goods leave the godown, and your accountant keeps working in Tally.

Found this problem in your business?

Don't estimate it. Run one van on Mulberry Sales for 14 days with your own shops, products and salesman, and measure it. One price covers your whole business, not each salesman.
