Choosing

Marg or a van sales app: what a distributor with vans should compare

Marg is strong billing and accounts software with its own order-taking app. What changes when your stock rides on vans, the five jobs to see demonstrated, the published prices, and when Marg is simply the better choice.

Short answer

If your shops order and you deliver the bills later, Marg with its eOrder app is a complete, cheaper answer. If your salesmen carry the stock on a van and bill at the shop, ask any app to show you the van loaded, billed from, unloaded and closed, and choose on that.

Marg is one of the best-known billing and accounts packages among Indian distributors (its own site says “1 Million+ Businesses Served Worldwide”), and many of our readers run it today. The question usually comes once vans are on the road: is Marg enough for the field, or does a van day need something built for it?

We sell a van sales app, so read this knowing who wrote it. Everything below about Marg comes from Marg’s own website, with the link beside it, read on 19 October 2026. Where one of their pages does not mention something, we say that page does not mention it. That is not the same as saying Marg cannot do it, and you should ask them.

What Marg says it is

Their home page calls the product “Marg ERP - GST Billing, Inventory & Accounting Software”. That is a fair description of a big, mature package: GST bills, stock, accounts and GST returns, with separate pharma and FMCG versions listed on the same page.

Their price list shows the licence editions:

  • Basic Edition: ₹10,300 + 18% GST, then ₹3,990/yr — 1 user, max 2
  • Silver Edition: ₹13,900 + 18% GST, then ₹4,780/yr — 1 user + 1 view-only
  • Gold Edition: ₹26,000 + 18% GST, then ₹9,550/yr — Renewal shown for up to 25 users

For the field, Marg sells a separate phone app. The eOrder page leads with “Double Your Orders, Double Your Earnings With Marg Online Ordering App” and prices it by the number of salesmen, per year, with 18% GST extra:

  • 2 salesmen: ₹5,550 a year
  • 5 salesmen: ₹7,500 a year
  • 12 salesmen: ₹13,900 a year
  • 25 salesmen: ₹25,000 a year
  • Unlimited salesmen: ₹46,500 a year

The question that decides it: order-taking or van billing?

There are two ways a distributor’s salesman works. In order-taking (pre-sales), he visits the shop, books an order on his phone, and the office bills and delivers it later. In van sales, the stock travels with him, he bills on the spot, and the money and leftover stock come back with the van in the evening. Many distributors do both. We explain the difference in van sales vs pre-sales.

The eOrder page describes order taking by salesmen, live stock for salesmen, salesman tracking, payment collection via MargPay, printed collection receipts, orders converted into invoices in Marg ERP 9+. That is a strong order-taking toolkit. The same page does not mention vans or vehicles, loading or unloading stock, routes or beats, billing without internet, an end-of-day close. Some of that may exist elsewhere in Marg. If your salesmen carry stock, ask Marg to demonstrate these five jobs, and ask us the same:

  1. Loading. Stock leaves the godown count when it goes onto a particular van, not when it is sold.
  2. Billing from the van. The salesman can only bill what is on his van, and sees how much is left, with or without signal.
  3. Old dues at the door. He collects last week’s balance against the right bill while he is standing in the shop.
  4. Unloading. What comes back is counted in, van by van, and the difference is visible the same night.
  5. The day’s close. Each man hands over cash that matches what the app says he collected, with UPI kept separate.

When Marg is the better choice

Pick Marg, or stay on it, when any of these is true:

  • Your salesmen take orders; they don’t carry stock. Then the eOrder app is built for exactly your day, and it feeds bills straight into the Marg you already use.
  • You want billing, accounts and GST returns in one package. Marg is billing and accounting software first; its price list includes “GST return in excel, csv & json”. We keep sales, stock and cash, and hand the numbers to your accountant in Excel; we do not file GST or generate e-way bills.
  • You sell pharma. Batch, expiry and the rules around them are Marg’s home ground.
  • Price is the deciding factor. For five salesmen, Marg’s published prices (Silver Edition plus the 5-salesman eOrder plan, with GST) come to about ₹25,252 in the first year and ₹14,490 a year after. Our Growth plan for the same team is ₹67,490 in the first year, setup included, and ₹29,988 a year after. On paper Marg costs less, and you should know that before you talk to us.

When a van sales app pays for itself

  • Stock goes missing between the godown and the shops. Van-wise loading and unloading is how you find it, and two packets a day at ₹40 is ₹2,400 a month.
  • Cash doesn’t match in the evening. A day close per salesman names the bill and the shop behind every rupee short.
  • Your team keeps growing. Our price is for the business, not per salesman: Growth covers up to 5 salesmen, 2 inventories, 5 vans included (up to 10). With a per-salesman app, ask what the next hire adds to the bill.

Using both is normal

Plenty of distributors keep Marg in the office for counter bills, accounts and GST, and run the vans on a van app. The rule is that nothing gets typed twice: check that you can bring your shops and products in from a file, and get every day’s sales back out as Excel your accountant can use. We wrote down how that works with the software you already have.

Five questions to ask any app, us included

  1. Show me a van being loaded, and the godown stock after.
  2. Bill a shop with the phone in flight mode. Then turn the signal back on and show me the bill arrive.
  3. Show me a shop’s balance by age, and what happens at its credit limit.
  4. What does each extra salesman cost, in writing?
  5. How do I take all my data out, and in what format?

If a van is part of your day, see what our van app does and what it costs. If your salesmen only take orders, Marg with eOrder is a fine answer and you can stop reading here.
